You may have heard the sad news this morning of Oscar de la Renta’s passing, at 82 we have lost a grand master of the classic evening dress.
I don’t know a great deal about the man but boy do I know his dresses. He was the grand master of the gown, that american, full skirted classic evening dress worn by so many Hollywood Actors, European Royals and First Lady’s. Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, SJP, Penelope Cruz, Princess Diana, perhaps most notably Jackie Kennedy in the 1960’s.
Recently Amal Alamuddin walked down the aisle to George Clooney in Oscar de la Renta Wedding Dress and I guess this brings me to my only encounter of an Oscar de la Renta gown.
When I was looking for my wedding dress I did what every bride to be does, I bought every bridal magazine and visited every single boutique possible. When work took me to New York I was lucky enough to make an appointment at Kleinfeld the biggest and best bridal experience in New York, this is more than a store set in a building more like a museum or art gallery thousands of dresses hoisted high above head height its a magical sort of place.
I tried a Vera Wang, a Vivienne Westwood and I tried Oscar de la Renta. Oh what a dress! A floor length creation with silk pleated bust, nipped in waist and layers of tulle and duchess satin.
Of course I didn’t buy it I couldn’t afford it and I fell in love with my dress, but it was an amazing experience.
Thank you Mr de la Renta
from lots of ladies for giving us that feeling.
Love DSB X
